Introduction: Web based information tools including Search Engines; Meta Search Engines are used to find the needed information in the World Wide Web. The aim of this study was to web-based clinical research information in Endocrine Diseases and compared search engines, Meta search engines and medical search endings in Endocrine Diseases. Methods: In this descriptive research, 5 search engine, 5 meta-search engines and 5 medical search engines are selected by the website of www.searchenginewatch.com as well-used internet search tools, were chosen. Endocrine Diseases keywords were chosen from medical subject Headings (Mesh) and then selected terms of endocrinology were searched in each of search engines. The first 10 results of search engines were selected for evaluation of recall and precision. Data were analyzed with Excel. Results: According to the result of this study, "Google" showed the higher most retrieved results (43% precision, 32% recalls. Among the Medical search engines "Progofrog" got the first rank (70.9%), Google scholar (59.09%), Pub med (57.27%) precision and pub med, Google scholar, sires, midi search (8.9%) recall. In Meta search engine Mamma got the highest rank (28%) precision and (27%) recall. Conclusions: General and medical search and meta-search engines are appropriate tools for researcher or students or professional users and they have appropriate search capabilities and facilities. Although using search engines in retrieving relevant documents is useful for endocrinology experts, but it is suggested that users follow the search in several search engines to access the relevant documents among the vastly available sources on web.

Introduction: An important consequence of chronic liver disease (CLD) is Endocrine disorders. The main object of this study was to assess serum hormones in children with CLD.Materials and Methods: In a cross sectional study between 2007-2009 ,57 children with chronic liver disease were enrolled. Levels of serum triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxin (T4) , thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), parathormon (PTH), calcium (c), phosphor (P) ,alkalanephosphatase (ALP),growth hormone (GH) and insulin like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), albumin (ALB) and total protein, triglyceride (TG) and cholesterol (CHOL), fasting blood sugar (FBS) and liver function tests were measured. Results: In this study, most patients' thyroid hormones and fasting blood sugar were at normal range. But there was a significant decline in serum IGF-1 levels in this patients. 28 percent of children had PTH levels higher than normal range for age and 24 percent had serum phosphor levels lower than normal range. 1.3 of these patients were bone fracture. Overt diabetics did not obsereve in our children. Conclusion: Children with CLD are GH resistant and might be at risk of osteopenia and bone fracture. So serum hormone levels should be carefully monitored in children with CLD.

Abstract:

Recently, a number of procedures for interventional radiology diagnosis and treatment have been developed by the radiologists. The “Interventional Radiology‟ refers to the therapeutic procedures performed under imaging guidance. The emergence of this specialty has been made possible by a lot of advances in the technology, imaging systems, and radiologists experience. Interventional radiologists are physicians who are experienced in minimally invasive procedures and targeted treatments which have less risk, less pain and less recovery time in comparison with the surgery. Minimizing the patient discomfort, avoid of general anesthesia, lower incidence of morbidity and mortality, and de-creases the length and cost of hospitalization are some advantages of interventional radiology procedures. Similar to all medical fields, interventional procedures have been introduced and developed for the diagnosis and treatment of endocrinology procedures. In this article we aim to review and report our experience about the role of interventional radiology in venous sampling for Endocrine Diseases (such as parathyroid venous sampling, inferior petrosal sinus sampling, adrenal venous sampling, and venous sampling for islet cell tumors). In addition, interventional treatments of neuroEndocrine cancer metastases to the liver, percutaneous ethanol injection therapy for secondary hyperparathy-roidism, treatment of hyperfunctioning thyroid nodules by percutaneous ethanol injection, radiofrequency ablation of the adrenal gland neoplasms, and also establishing a cGMP pancreatic islet processing facility have been discussed in this article.

Abstract:

Our understanding of the pathogenesis of Endocrine disorders increase rapidly by genetic studies at the molecular level. Common Endocrine disorders such as diabetes mellitus, obesity, osteoporosis, dyslipidemia and cancer follow the multifactorial model in the genetic aspect. This review tries to clarify the approach in molecular studies of such Diseases for clinicians in different specialties. How to evaluate a possible association between a single nucleotide polymorphism and an endocrinopathy or its complication is the main concern of this review. Two approaches for gene mapping will be discussed as well as main challenges regarding each approach. All such genetic studies ideally include some test of the association between genome sequence variation and the phenotype of interest such as the trait itself, the presence of a given complication, or measures of some endocrinopathy-related intermediate trait. Despite different advances in this analysis, there are major concerns regarding the overall performance and robustness of genetic association studies. By using powerful new high-throughput methods, further insights to molecular basis of such Endocrine disorders can be expected. Close correlation between geneticists and clinicians can effectively bridge between basic sciences and clinical investigations.

Abstract:

In this century one of the commonest causes of death is hypertension which is preventabale by it's proper treatment.Although 95% of patients suffer from essential hypertension and the remaining 5% are classified as secondary hypertension, which are completely cureable, by treating the underlying disease. The recent group of hypertensive patients atracted my interest to have a retrospective study on their hospital charts from view points of, prevalence, age, sex, intensity of blood pressure, laboratory .attempts, underlying disease and final treatment. Out of 2395 hypertensive patients who were admitted in different department of EMAM REZA hospital, such as internal medicine, genicology, cardiology and pediatric, only 157 cases had secondary hypertension which were sub divided by underlying causes of their hypertension as folow:8 cases of out-patients of pheochromocytoma had permanent hypertension, who recieved antihypertensive drugs from 2 months to 3 years. The majority of patients, who had pheochromocytoma complained of headache, tachycardia and diaphoresis. The ultimate treatment was surgery on them. The second group of secondary hypertensive patients were implicated by cushing syndrome who were 19 cases. They were between 31 to 45 years of age. 100% of them had a high systolic pressure which was controled by dexamethason test. This test is very beneficial in diagnosing of cushing syndrome. The third group were 4 cases of hyperparathyroidism with hypertension. They were mostly above 30 years of age. The fourth group were 8 cases of hyperthyroidism whose age were above 45 years, The female to male ratio 4:1, that lower than is in the literature (7:1) and mostly had a mild high systolic pressure. After all, we came to a conclusion to advise the young physicians, should always keep in mind the possiblity of secondary hypertension every case of high blood pressure.
